Black Masterbatch for HDPE Pipe and Film — 40% Carbon Black, N330

An N330 furnace-black concentrate in PE or PP carrier, used at 2–5% addition to colour polyethylene pipe, conduit, geomembrane and film while providing UV screening. Supplied as free-flowing 2.5–3.5 mm granules in 25 kg bags.

What it does: carbon black delivers two functions at once — full hiding power and UV protection. At 2–2.5% carbon black in the finished part, most polyolefins reach the UV resistance required for outdoor pipe and geomembrane service.

Where it works — and where it does not

A furnace-black grade for colour and UV screening. It is not a conductive grade.

Suitable for

  • HDPE water and gas pipe, PE100 and PE80 systems
  • Corrugated conduit and cable protection pipe
  • Geomembrane and pond liner
  • Black carrier bags, mulch film and agricultural film
  • Injection moulded black parts in PP or PE
  • Outdoor parts needing UV screening at 2–2.5% carbon black

Not suitable for

  • Conductive or antistatic parts — these need conductive carbon black, not N330
  • High-gloss automotive interior requiring deep jetness
  • Food-contact surfaces unless the specific grade is approved for that use
  • Fine-denier fibre spinning where filter pressure limits are tight
  • Applications where the black must match a specified colour standard without a colour match trial

Suggested addition rate by process

ProcessTypical additionNotes
HDPE water pipe2–2.5%Targets the 2–2.5% carbon black level commonly required for UV resistance
Corrugated conduit2–3%Higher loading improves hiding on thin walls
Blown film2–5%Film thickness drives the rate; thin film needs more for full opacity
Injection molding1–3%Reduce to the minimum that still hides the substrate

Rates assume a 40% carbon black grade.

Documentation supplied with every batch

TDS — technical datasheet

English, listing carbon black content, type, carrier, MFI with test conditions and the dispersion test method.

COA — batch certificate

Issued per production batch with measured values and batch number.

MSDS — safety data sheet

English, 16-section format, plus HS code guidance for the destination country.

Frequently asked questions

How much carbon black ends up in my finished pipe?

The finished part carries roughly one third of the masterbatch loading. A 40% concentrate added at 2.5% puts about 1% carbon black into the pipe; to reach 2.5% you need either a higher-content grade or a higher addition rate. Confirm the figure with your own gravimetric check.

Does black masterbatch provide UV protection?

Yes, carbon black at 2–2.5% in the finished part screens UV radiation and is the standard approach for outdoor HDPE pipe and geomembrane. Below that level protection drops quickly.

What is N330 carbon black?

N330 is a standard reinforcing-grade furnace black with a average primary particle size around 26–30 nm. It gives good colour strength and dispersion at moderate cost, which is why it dominates pipe and film grades. N550 is coarser and used where dispersion is difficult.

Can I use this grade for conductive parts?

No. Conductive compounds need conductive or extra-conductive carbon black at much higher loadings, and are a different product family. Tell us the target surface resistivity and we will quote separately.

What is the minimum order and lead time?

One metric ton per grade, 7–15 day production lead time. Trial quantities can be combined with other grades on one pallet.
